The Starling
Bajeskwartier will be a diverse district with homes for all kinds of households. The Starling in the Central District is a good example of this. The stepped design of the building provides plenty of space for roof terraces and balconies. Social rented homes of De Alliantie and owner-occupied homes will be developed here, together with a health centre, fitness facility and the best ice cream parlour in Amsterdam.
As soon as you step outside your home you will be surrounded by friendly, urban bustle. But indoors is a sea of calm. All homes in this building have clever layouts and their own, secluded outdoor space. Materials from the old prison buildings will be visibly incorporated in the new building wherever possible. Even before they set to work, the architects knew what materials were available and they have adapted their design accordingly.
